The numbness gives way to heated pain
when you think you can thaw them,
when there is still hope of a flame,
of the iced pine needle burning hot enough
to burn the black ice fingers.
But they are lost,
and the flames here do not burn hot,
or bright, or burn seldom at all.
Each finger claimed by the cold
keeps the cadence of men lost to the frost,
as if God has deemed you to keep track
of those killed by the arctic winds.
A thousand miles from home,
