The Fool's Journey by gym is an indie game that mixes solitaire with tarot to create a very unique digital card game. You play as the Fool, who needs to defeat all of the Arcana cards (tarot cards) in the solitaire deck.

In order to do this, you draw four cards at a time and must "resolve" 3 out of those cards by storing (putting them in your deck), using (using them against another card or yourself), or discarding them. Gameplay demonstration of The Fool's Journey

There are four types of cards: swords and wands (which can be used to attack Arcana cards), heal (which can be used to fully heal the Fool), and pentacles (which can be used to play a face card). You must use these cards to defeat all of the Arcana cards in order to win.

The game plays pretty much exactly as you'd expect a card game to in real life, other than that if you lose to a particular Arcana card, it offers advice based on that card and takes you back to the start game screen. Beyond that, it has a rewarding gameplay loop and is easily replayable.

Card examples from The Fool's Journey

The music is very pretty 8-bit chimes, and the pixel art is beautiful, using a minimalistic white-purple-pink color palette with black and blue accents. It was the art and aesthetics that stuck out to me most since I don't play a lot of card games, in real life or otherwise, but I had a friend who plays a ton of Balatro and Picture Poker and zey said it was sick so take that as you will. Overall, it's cozy, low-stakes, and just fun to play! If card games are your thing, please consider trying this one out!
